Born in Moscow, Idaho, December 8, 1941, Jay Steensma was raised in Eastern Washington by his parents, John and Oliva Steensma. He was educated at the University of Washington School of Art; graduating in 1963. As a resident mostly of Seattle between 1959 and his death in 1994 at the age of 52, John Jay Steensma produced an enormous body of work which is only now beginning to be accepted and appreciated by museums and collectors throughout the Northwest. In his life-work Jay returned again and again to alter, refine, clarify and simplify his expression of the themes that permeated his ouevre: religion, the environment, the classical subjects of landscapes, interiors, still-lifes, portraiture and representation of common life in his time.
By the creation of this web site we - friends of Jay Steensma - are hoping to reenforce the importance of Jay Steensma and the relevance of his work as a significant regional artist.
